Section 3 Unit of Community Health Promoters was formed in 2009 by 40 female and male Community Health Workers from Nairobi City County in Kenya. The nonprofit organization was formed so as to champion for the struggle for recognition and remuneration of Community Health Workers’ frontline role in promotion of Primary Health Care in Kenya.
Before legal registration, the organization worked under the health program at Kamukunji Paralegal Network (KAPLET) from 2014 until 28th March 2023 when Section 3 Unit of Community Health Promoters was legally registered in Kenya as a Community Based Organization by the Directorate of Social Development pursuant to and in accordance with the provisions of Community Groups Registration Act No.30 of 2022. Certificate Registration No. HUD.GPO/KAM/CBO/03/2023/001.
It was not making much sense to us as the frontline workers to make frequent referrals of patients for medical treatments in health institutions and then after undergoing treatment, these patients were subjected back to same conditions to get re-infected and then referred back to hospitals again and again. This is the reason why we opted to address social determinants of ill health. To us, health means “a state of physical, mental and social well being – and not necessarily the absence of disease or infirmity” as defined in the Preamble of the WHO Constitution. Therefore, every organization is a health organization and every ministry is a health ministry from a broader perspective. In order to promote health, a human rights-based approach is required in developing the capacities of ‘duty- bearers and ‘rights- holders’.
